A tropical storm pounded the island of Luzon with over 13 inches of rain on Saturday and CNN reports that “dozens are dead” in Manila flooding. Based on what I’m hearing from contacts in the Philippines, the death toll is probably a lot higher. Some of the most affected areas are places that I’ve frequented many times while there in Quezon City. (CNN calls “Quezon City” a suburb of Manila, but that’s a ‘suburb’ with nearly 3 million people!)
Also consider the fact that Manila is a coastal city at sea level, and due to the extreme poverty, the lack of infrastructure makes this kind of disaster particularly dangerous. Coca-Cola, McDonalds, and Jollibee restaurant are among corporations who have stepped up to the plate to offer much needed relief effort. Please keep the Philippines in your prayers.
