Population Control is NOT the Answer to Poverty

One constant misconception I seem to run into is the false idea that population control is a solution to poverty. Many see increased availability and promotion of artificial contraception as a way to reduce poverty in the Philippines. There is some truth in that proposition, but it is a truth embedded in a pool of lies and false reasoning. It is true that there would be less economic poverty in the Philippines if Filipinos liberalized their laws on contraception, but only in the same way that it is true that a nuclear bomb dropped on Manila would reduce poverty.

Here’s the bottom line: we want to reduce Filipino poverty not Filipinos! The secular “solution” of increasing birth control and contraception is a quick and cowardly fix that avoids facing the real problem and in turn creates problems that are even worse.  As the Vatican recently told the UN, population growth, not population control, is the solution to poverty.
