Shipping Donations to the Philippines

Each month, we ship an average of two large cargo boxes to the Philippines. Each month we are shipping used clothing, school supplies, and other needed items. We are hoping to collect additional items such as toiletries – especially toothbrushes and toothpaste. These items can be distributed to the poor. If you have a small group that would consider doing a drive for us – we can really use children sized flip flops and dental hygiene products.

$4.42 Billion Needed for Long Term Flood Recovery

Most of the flood waters from Ondoy and Pepeng have receded but the World Bank estimates that an additional $4.42 billion US dollars are needed for the long term recovery effort. Philippine Aid Society will be involved with this effort in whatever capacity we are able. Next year, we are already planning two events in the Los Angeles area in cooperation with Arnold G as fund-raisers for this enormous need.

Katrina Victims to Reach out to the Philippines

I received a call this morning from a lady in southern Louisiana who is putting together a yard sale with their parish tomorrow and is planning to donate clothing and toiletry items for the victims of typhoon Ondoy. Having been hard hit by Hurricanes, most notably Katrina, the southern Louisiana area knows what it’s like to be in desperate need of disaster relief!

I thought this was a story worth sharing. If you want to donate clothing or other needed items, feel free to contact us and we’ll try to help you find a location accepting donations near you. Keep the Phi

Ondoy Death Toll at 386 as New Storm Approaches

Another typhoon is headed for the Philippines even as badly needed disaster relief efforts are underway and the official death toll continues to climb, now at 386. I still expect the final number to be much higher. Please consider a donation and of course, keep the Philippines in your prayers.

New Storm Threatens the Philippines

The official death toll for Ondoy (Ketsana) flooding is now at 246 with 38 missing. A new storm now threatens the Philippines according to the Associated Press. Please pray that this storm does not hit the Philippines so that the relief effort can continue unhindered. The article above states:

In the Bagong Silangan area in the capital, about 150 people sheltered on a covered basketball court that had been turned into a makeshift evacuation center for storm victims.

I know exactly where this is and have been there many times. I also have several relatives in that area. One person I know has had their home destroyed and all their belongings. Also please understand the gravity of the situation there: this particular neighborhood was built nearly entirely by Gawad Kalinga and other charity organizations. It was formerly a ‘squatter area’ and the people living there are some of the poorest in the Philippines.

I can’t imagine what kind of damage has been done there, but this kind of flooding in such a poor area leaves thousands of people homeless and without their belongings. I was told by an informant in that area that they are still finding corpses in trees and buried under mud. Please continue to pray and if you can, we need donations.

Philippine Aid Society has established a fund for the relief effort. 100% of your tax deductible donation will go to provide relief for the flood victims. Simply indicate that the donation is for the flood victims in your notes when you make your donation. Any amount will help!

Bombing at Philippine Cathedral

Our prayers and sympathies go out to the victims of yesterday’s bombing in Cotabato City’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Muslim extremists are said to be behind this cowardly act of violence in Mindanao.

Hundreds of churchgoers remained inside the cathedral after the powerful explosion, praying even more fervently for “peace.” The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said that Cotabato Archbishop Orlando Quevedo was delivering his homily when the incident occurred, causing panic among churchgoers.
